Virus-like particles in Perkinsus atlanticus (Apicomplexa, Perkinsidae)
نویسنده
چکیده
Virus-like particles (VLP) were observed in different phases of the in vitro zoosporulation of Perkinsus atlanticus (Apicomplexa, Perlunsidae) which parasitized the gill tissues of Rudtapes decussatus (Molluscs, Bivalvia). These VLP were represented by numerous electron-dense bodies (ca 125 nm diameter) not previously described in similar culture processes. The VLP were densely packed in a membrane-lined inclusion of isolated host-cell cytoplasm of parasitic origin. They were also found among prezoosporangia and zoosporangia of P. atlanticus, a species that causes recurrent mortalities in the clam R. decussatus. The ultrastructural organization of these VLP seems to represent a new and unclassified virus of P. atlanticus.

Molecular characterization of the ribosomal RNA gene region of Perkinsus atlanticus: its use in phylogenetic analysis and as a target for a molecular diagnosis.
Due to their widespread distribution and virulence, protozoan species of the genus Perkinsus are especially worrisome parasites for shellfish farmers. In the present paper, we investigate the organization and the structural features of the nuclear ribosomal genes of Perkinsus atlanticus as well as the use of DNA sequence information from this region for phylogenetic analyses. This information h...
متن کاملFine structure of clonally propagated in vitro life stages of a Perkinsus sp. isolated from the Baltic clam Macoma balthica.
We established monoclonal in vitro cultures of a Perkinsus sp. isolated from the baltic clam Macoma balthica and compared morphological features of various life stages by light and transmission electron microscopy to those of the currently accepted Perkinsus species: Perkinsus marinus, Perkinsus olseni, Perkinsus atlanticus, and Perkinsus qugwadi. Except that trophozoites were slightly larger t...
متن کاملIdentification of MMV Malaria Box Inhibitors of Perkinsus marinus Using an ATP-Based Bioluminescence Assay
"Dermo" disease caused by the protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus (Perkinsozoa) is one of the main obstacles to the restoration of oyster populations in the USA. Perkinsus spp. are also a concern worldwide because there are limited approaches to intervention against the disease. Based on the phylogenetic affinity between the Perkinsozoa and Apicomplexa, we exposed Perkinsus trophozoites to the...
متن کاملDescription of Perkinsus andrewsi n. sp. isolated from the Baltic clam (Macoma balthica) by characterization of the ribosomal RNA locus, and development of a species-specific PCR-based diagnostic assay.
A Perkinsus species was isolated from the baltic clam Macoma balthica and an in vitro culture established under conditions described for P. marinus. As reported previously, morphological features remarkable enough to clearly indicate that this isolate is a distinct Perkinsus species were lacking. In this study, regions of the rRNA locus (NTS, 18S, ITS1, 5.8S, and ITS2) of this isolate were clon...
متن کاملOccurrence of Perkinsus species (Protozoa, Apicomplexa) in bivalves from the Great Barrier
Bivalves from the Great Barrier Reef were examined for Perkinsus infection using the thioglycollate method (Ray 1966). They were taken from Heron, Lizard, Orpheus, North Direction and Thetford Reefs. Thirty of the 84 species examined were Infected (160 out of 644 individuals). They belonged to 23 families. The 4 most frequently infected families, in descending order, were Chamidae, Arcidae, Tri...
